Japan Supports Health Sector in Kasese
The Embassy of Japan in Uganda has today commissioned “The Project for Construction of a Maternity Ward at St. Paul’s Health Centre.” The project contract of 90,544 USD had been signed in December 2010 between the Embassy and St. Pauls Health Centre to construct a maternity ward and procure medical equipment to improve maternal health service at the Centre.
The Health Centre handles 81 deliveries on average per month. However, due to lack of maternity space, mothers and babies had been admitted in the general ward with other patients, exposed to a danger of cross infection. H. E. Kazuo Minagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, who officiated the handover at the Centre, said that through the project health service delivery would be greatly improved at the Health Centre for the benefit of mothers and infants in the region.
The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 155 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
